World Food Programme’s Innovation Accelerator identifies, nurtures and scales bold solutions to hunger globally. We support WFP intrapreneurs and external start-ups and companies from our home in Munich, Germany, through financial support, access to a network of experts and a global field reach.
The Accelerator believes the way forward in the fight against hunger is not necessarily in building grand plans, but identifying and testing solutions in an agile way. It is a space where the world can find out what works and what doesn’t in addressing hunger – a place where we can be bold, and fail as well as succeed.
Through our regular boot camps and sprint programme, high-potential social enterprises will get access to awesome mentorship, financial support and access to the world’s largest humanitarian organisation, our operations, partners and technical experts.
Our Sprint Programme is an intensive 3 to 6-month acceleration that helps projects and start-ups reach proof of concept, develop prototypes ready for implementation, and/or scale. Teams receive financial support, guidance and space to bring their idea to life from the Munich-based Accelerator, and access to WFP’s global network of partners and resources.
Teams participating in the Sprint Programme receive up to USD 80,000 per Sprint, with further funding dependent upon progress and achievement of key targets.
As of July 2017, more than 20 internal-WFP innovation projects are being supported that address a range of challenges—from blockchain to improving farmers’ access to critical market and weather information. Innovation projects supported by the Accelerator receive financial support worth USD 50-100,000 for a three- to six-month sprint, hands-on support, strategic guidance and access to a global network of experts and partners.
Through our Sprint Programme, the WFP Innovation Accelerator supports innovation teams in identifying and connecting with key stakeholders – experts, Country Offices or management – in order to facilitate the implementation of innovation projects. Teams also have access to a broad network of private sector and non-profit experts, donors and mentors who help guide the development of our projects.
